Wheels Off Road

When people are talking about alloy wheels what do they mean when they say ET ?

for example they might say they've put 7.5 x 15's on the rear with an ET20 ? what does it mean. problem i've got is i want my vw lupo to look meaner but know nothing about sooping up a car. i've been told to put some phat allows on and new springs to lower it. sounds great but i'm scared of the repocusions i don't want to have to hold my breath when i go over a speed bump or the wheels nackering my arches or the new springs smashing up suspension. can anyone help please!!!!!!!! can someone tell me how big and how wide an alloy i can get and how low to drop it without the car having to avoid speed humps and without damaging the suspension.... many thanks
