Why are the front wheels on my 2001 Ford Ranger 4x4 locking up?

The front wheels on my truck have been locking up and the only way to undo it is to put it in reverse and drive for a bit. I think it has something to do with the transmission or the 4x4 feature?

1. your supposed to back up to release front hubs on fords
2. if they lock up when applying the brakes, you need new brake calipers
